Of Buffalo Bills and Watkins Glen

Last Tuesday we held our interactive panel discussion with Russell Brandon of the Buffalo Bills and Craig Rust from Watkins Glen. Bills_logo

The discussion was primarily focused on sponsorships at sporting events and commitments from sponsors. Here are a few key points (thanks to D-D Flannery, who attended and shared this with me)...

Watkinsglen Get to know your sponsors – don’t take a minor league approach

Partnerships within the same category-

    1. If you are going to partner with sponsors from the same category, designate different levels of sponsorship.
    2. Prefer to partner with one official sponsor from each category.
    3. National & regional sponsors

The days of slapping a logo ad in program are long gone!

Most common mistakes made with sponsorships--

    1. Not fully understanding the sport; the sponsorship opportunities that exist at the event / program.
    2. Making sure title sponsor’s objectives (name recognition, improving the bottom line, exposure) are consistent with sponsorship agreement.
    3. Sponsors must know their spending threshold objectives.

Product must be good enough to drive interest of sponsors / corporate partners.
