If you've been in the world of marketing for more than a few days then you know content marketing has become one of the most effective ways for businesses to attract and retain customers. But what is content marketing? Generally speaking, it's the creation and distribution of valuable, relevant, and consistent content that is designed to attract and retain a specific audience.

Here are three tips for success in content marketing:

Know Your Audience

You have to know the audience you'd like your content to reach. Who are they, what are their challenges, and what are they interested in? Once you know this, you'll be able to create content that answers their questions and solves their problems. You may even be able to solve a problem they didn't know they had.

Provide Value

Content marketing 101 is all about providing value to your audience. Your goal should be creating content that your audience finds insightful, educational, engaging, or, ideally, a combination of all three. When your audience sees the value in your content and it solves their problems, that positions you as a thought leader in your industry and encourages them to reach out to you for more information. Here are some examples of the types of content you can create to provide value to your audience:

  • Blog posts
  • eBooks & white papers
  • Infographics
  • How-to videos
  • Demos and webinars
  • Case studies

Be Consistent

You can't expect to attract, engage, and retain your audience if you only publish content sporadically. Plan your content ahead of time by creating a content calendar and sticking to it. Not only will this help you stay organized and consistent, but you'll be able to create higher-quality content that resonates with your audience. Remember, you're playing the long game with content marketing, so consistency over the long term is key.
